Ryoushi Ryou, a Shinigami (trns: Death God, or in the english version of Bleach, Soul reaper) of the Gotei 13, the 13 squads that protect Soul Society from Hollows, giant monsters, formed from the heartless shadows of a spirit left alone in the real world for too long, as well as keeping the spirit flow of the two worlds in check.

Ryou has no memory of his old name, dying in the middle of a confrontation between a Shinigami and a Hollow earlier in the 20th century. He became friends with one Ban Momochiru. They find out later they have almost the same shinigami powers within their Zanpakto's (Trns: Soul slashers), with a few differences. Their prime element is lighting, but the source is different. While Ban's lightning comes from the Sky in static form, Ryou's power is drawn from the Earth, in the grounded form, a form similar to Magnetism. Ryou creates golems out of the earth using this grounded lightning and controls his reitsu (spirit power) into the golems to aid him in his battles.

Ryou is also a psychopathic killer on the inside, thus he expends most of his spirit energy to supress the instincts within him. Although he has the power to become a stronger fighter, the instincts within him hinder his progress.
